Weeks until the Six meets the Six

Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose William Faulkner
The annual Route 66 International Festival is a time to not only forget about work, school or mowing the yard one Saturday, it allows roadies as well as common travelers to celebrate the historic highway that has been popularized in music, television and folk lore. People's interaction with one other as well as seeing and experiencing new and unusual places has helped make the Double Six a special place. As Texas Country and Western singer Johnny Bush once professed, "No two journeys end the same." Each year the festival occurs in different areas around the country and despite revisiting some of the sites, the memories are brand new. This year's festival, however, will be a bit more sober. The last two years have seen a plethora of inclimate weather. From Hurricane Sandy in the northeast to the devastating tornadoes in the heart of Oklahoma, including a portion of 66 in El Reno, the men, and women of the asphalt have seen tough times. This year's 66 festival will take place in Joplin, Missouri, the recipient of an EF-5 only two years earlier. Everyone has overcome the various obstacles presented to them, and now is a chance for Americans, and people from all over the world to congregate and celebrate America's museum on wheels. http://route66internationalfestival.com/ Over the next few weeks, leading up to the event, I will post a few of my favorite spots along the Mother Road. Sit back and enjoy.
