The Final Morning

It was 8 AM and I slept through the roosters howdy. It was a serene, yet cloudy morning and it was time to do a little reading. The room had the most ecclectic and interesting array of books I have ever seen. Examples of what I read include: Image of America's Bandera County and The Pictoral History of Bandera County. Each had unique images ranging from the town's Polish influence beginning in the 1850's to the role Country and Western music played in the community. What a way to start my day!

After showering, I drove to the Cabaret Dance Hall, a place that featured legends such as Ernest Tubb, "Gentleman" Jim Reeves and Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys a few calendars ago.

Now, I am in the old west spirit, but I knew the Frontier Museum was still closed, so I caressed Texas Highway 16 to Pipe Creek just a few miles south. Interestingly, the town got its name from a gentleman who lost his pipes in the rainstorm and then pursued to roll down the creek.

I had to stop and take a picture of a classic piece of the roadside.

This was the Lewis Store, which opened in 1941 and it served Gulf gasoline.

At this juncture, it was time to head back and visit the museum.

When I walked in, I was greeted by a polite lady in her 70's. After asking her about the Lewis Store, she replied, "I am sorry, I just work here." I felt confused, but did not push the subject. I later learned she was from Ohio (or as she put it "Ohia) and relocated to the Hill Country after her husband retired.

The museum featured an ecclectic group of items ranging from western art

to a World War I helmet worn by a deceased German.

After I finished admiring the museum's collection I went back to the truck and headed down Highway 16 to the infamous Loop 1604, where I encountered crazy drivers of different genders. Fortunately, the trip down Interstate 10 to Houston was smooth with the exception of drivers slowing down to change lanes once we got toward the I-45 interchange. The trip home from there was as smooth as silk, but boy I was tired.

What a weekend!
