The Dream of an Unknown: A mirage on the road

Have you ever been behind the wheel and wondered what is ahead? No matter where you are and how many times you have driven a route, "no two journeys ever end the same." As the music plays on, the mind wanders off to the point where there is nothing but asphalt or concrete and the vehicle.

As the wheels continue to burn the pavement, thoughts of work, last weekend and next month's rent begin to subdue and your mind and soul has been sucked in by the highway. The grip of the hand(s) begin to loosen, the speedometer stays at a steady 65 miles-per-hour and you are now two counties away from before.

All of a sudden, images of a 1949 Packard and 1952 Ford Crestline Skyliner take over and they appear to be riding besides you. As you look to the side and rear view mirror, your eyes widen as this journey has taken a turn for the nostalgic.

After ten minutes you finally figure out what route your taking.

The bright sunshine of Tucson replaces the dreay rain of your starting point. Instead of seeing self-service gas stations, a Texaco appears to the right with men gladly waiting for your business. Right next door, you see a cafe with signs that read "Open 24 Hours" and "Bring that Empty Stomach." To the left there are several children playing baseball in the local playground. All are wearing the uniforms of their heroes such as Mickey Mantle, Bob Feller and Duke Snyder. At a stop light, you overhear the record store loudly playing the newly released single,"Shake,Rattle and Roll," by Bill Haley and the Comets.

For the next sixty miles, there is nothing but cactus and bright sunshine. However, as you approach Phoenix, the skies turn grey, the trees reappear and the radio comes back on. To the left you see a 2011 Ford Mustang and as it turns out, you are only an hour from your home. Welcome Back.
