A treat in Gallup
Through hundreds of miles of traveling I have encountered corporate fast food chains and mom and pop eateries. Once a week I will look at some of my favorite places to eat. In 2011, I took a trip to Gallup in west-central New Mexico. I began my second full day walking around part of the Mother Road,
before my stomach told me it was time to fuel up, so I looked around. I found an intriguing possibility.
The hand grabs the metallic handle and pushes the glass door open. Coffee perfumes the room. People in Levi's and Carhart's sit around talking or reading the Gallup Independent in booths capable of fitting two to four patrons. Faux-wood paneled walls are adorned with framed artwork. Cries of infants wanting to roam the halls of Jerry's provide the soundtrack to the morning meal. A waitress with caramel complexion zooms to the table. Jerry's is known for their chips and salsa, a la carte tacos and other Mexican dishes. However, it was early in the morning and I do not eat eggs. After requesting orange juice along with hash browns and bacon she sends the order to the back with an ounce of pride. Chocolate milk dampens the pallet as locals continue to come in like cars moving along Henry Ford's assembly line. Each crunch of bacon and hash brown fill up the engine. Murmurs of people talking about the economy, work or personal issues provide insight into the world of this Route 66 community.
For over 40 years Jerry Gonzales owned this Gallup establishment. Today, the cafe is owned by Archie Baca, Jr. of the Baca family who own several restaurants in Gallup.
Jerry's Cafe is located on 406 W. Coal Avenue in Gallup, NM 87301
