Fear and Overcome

Normally, I write about something historical, but I wanted to get somethings off my chest.

I admit that recently, I have began to lose my focus of the heart; thinking, breathing and writing about roads and highways. Personal indiscretions, getting caught up in rancid political debates, watching Leave it to Beaver way too many times and doing nothing but relaxing has caused me to detour away from my purpose. This past weekend, I decided to drive up to see my girl friend in Lubbock, Texas.

On the way up, I stopped in Mineral Wells and Albany, Texas off US 180, parts of formerly the Bankhead Highway, to take a few photos of signs and other items that interested me. This was an important step because for all I talk about driving on older roads, I have a fear of stopping by that cafe or even off the road to view a sign, an older gas station or motel. I always felt that a local would drive me away.

Over the course of the weekend, all my lady friend and I did was attend the Texas Tech Spring Football Game and relax, enjoying one another's company. During which time I began to realize it is time to relax and get back on the road.

I realized it was time to get rid of my fear. So, I stopped off the road in a couple of spots down Texas Highway 36 between Abilene and Brenham. Doing so has given me confidence to follow what my Higher being wants for me to do, become more active in the open road.

If Okies can go away to California in hopes of a better future and African Americans can conjure up the guts to travel down the Bankhead Highway in Alabama to promote their rights, then I can get on that road and explore this great land of ours.

In looking back, I have held myself back from doing what I love to do. From this day forward, I am deciding to FEAR NO MORE, the highway is my passion and I need to stop hiding from it.
